Firstly, it is not enough on it's own to simply patch up the broken brickwork. The method we are going to discuss here is entirely cosmetic and will not provide or restore any structural integrity on it's own. Cracked brickwork can be caused by a wide variety of issues, ranging from subsidence, lintel failure, tree root induced shrinkage and many many more. It is important you get these issues fixed first before proceeding with cosmetic repairs of the brickwork. You can check out the Repair Guides [LINK] section of the website here for help with tackling these issues yourself- or alternatively, if you're looking for someone to do this work for you, get in touch with our sister company via their website at www.jtcstructural.co.uk where they will be happy to help.
Spalling brickwork refers to the deterioration of bricks, often appearing as crumbling, flaking, peeling, chipping, or cracking. This process occurs when the outer surface of the brick begins to break down and eventually falls away. While spalling may sometimes be a superficial issue, it’s essential to inspect it promptly to prevent further damage.
The primary cause of spalling is moisture. Traditional lime mortar allows moisture to escape between bricks, but when modern cement pointing (such as strap or ribbon pointing) is applied, it traps water inside. This forces moisture to escape through the brick face, accelerating deterioration—especially in older, solid-walled properties that have been improperly repointed.
Older bricks, lacking the protective treatments of modern facing bricks, are more porous and absorb water easily. In freezing conditions, trapped water expands as it turns to ice, causing cracks and further weakening the brick structure.
Of course, there are a multitude of different reasons brick can be damaged, however the most common ones are noted below. Click the links to see relevant videos of these types of damage being repaired.
Using Strucsol's colour matching brick repair mortar, with a little time and patience spent to match up the colour to your brickwork, you can make the damage virtually disappear. Don't believe it? See the results below for yourself.
IMPORTANT: the colour that you mix on the palette will be the colour that it will remain when on the wall- so it is really important to make sure you take the time to match the colour on the palette before applying to the wall.

"This stuff is great. I had complaints from a customer that a load of their bricks had been damaged during cavity wall tie installation works. They were expecting me to remove and replace all the broken bricks. His face was a picture when he couldn't find them anymore after I'd been at it with this stuff! Thanks again, great service and support."
